Using the Opacity Mask in Illustrator

When you use a transparency mask, the black areas of the mask hides the images underneath it and the white areas exposes the image.

Use a coloured background. Place a symbol of black and white on the top.

Select both the images.

Find the Transparency tab.

Click on the arrow and choose Make Opacity Mask.

View the result.

Undo the last step and the click on the arrow again. Uncheck New Opacity Masks Are Clipping.

In the result you will see that the mask has not clipped the entire piece but only the artwork on the upper side.

Uncheck New Opacity Masks Are Inverted.

The mask has been inverted now.

By clicking Alt on the thumbnail you can edit the mask.

To deactivate the mask, use Shift+click.

If you want to reinstate the mask, select Release Opacity Mask or Enable Opacity Mask.
