Cropping the Excess Image from an Artwork

Step 1

First of all, to crop the excess artwork you need to know the exact size of your document. Start with a new document and enter the dimensions as below. Navigate to File > Document Setup to check the document size.

Step 2

In the image shown below you see that there is some extra artwork which needs to be removed.

Pick the Rectangle Tool and click once on the artboard. Type the exact dimension of the document size we used before to create a rectangle that will match your artboard. Here we have used 450 X 450px.

Step 3

Make sure that the rectangle is on top. If not hit Command/Control + Shift +], or Right Click on the rectangle and use Arrange > Bring to Front. Note: If you have more than one layer, the rectangle should be on top of all other layers and shapes.

Step 4

For aligning the rectangle on the artboard, open the Align Palette (Window > Align) and check “Align to Artboard”. In Illustrator CS2 and the previous versions, the “Align to Artboard” option is in the palette options (the little arrow in the upper right corner of the palette).

Select the rectangle and click on the 2 buttons shown below on the Align palette to align to align the shape on the artboard.

Step 5

Make sure all the layers are unlocked. If not sure, then go to Object > Unlock All, or use Option + Command + 2 (Mac). Not sure about PC. Then “Select All” (Command/Control + A, Select > All) or select everything with your mouse. Now you will seee on the artboard that the rectangle is perfectly aligned.

Step 6

Select everything on the artboard and go to Window > Pathfinder. Then hit the crop button.

After cropping the excess image will be deleted from the artboard.

This is the final product.
